Do I need Patents or Copyrights to Protect my Software?
Even for experts, software protection may require in-depth analyzing. In certain countries, software is protected by copyright. No registration may be required. Protection commences when the software is conceived or sold. Software may be protected in the same country by both copyright and patents if there is technical subject matter involved. In other countries only patent protection is available. Legal protection may last between 20 and 50 years (for patents and copyrights respectively).
Software protection is currently one of the most interesting legal areas. In most instances quick development and marketing are more important than protection.
